The New York Musical Theatre Festival has accepted me as a staff dramaturg for 2014. I am terrifically excited and thankful for this opportunity. My special thanks go to Director of Programming Mary Kate Burke.

I was referred by my long-time client Andrew Barrett, whose musical JULIAN PO was presented in 2013.  It was given a full production, and won the NYMF awards for  Best Music (Ira Antelis) and Best Actress award (Luba Mason) .  Andrew’s lyrics won an Honorable Mention. I have just finished dramaturging a rewrite of the musical.

I am so impressed with how interconnected the musical theatre world is. This fall I have been dramaturging a terrific new musical called PUMPED, which presented a staged reading in NYC. Luba Mason appeared in PUMPED in the iconic  role of Margaux Bottier. PUMPED features the hot new composer/lyricist team of Kyle Ewalt and Michael Ian Walker, as well as librettists Marla Woodhill, J.D. Jacobson and Nicole Jacobson.

I love dramaturging musicals, and have worked on many of them over the years with Andrew Barrett, B.T. McNicholl,  The Harold Prince Musical Theatre Institute/The Directors Company, George Marcy, Bob Goldstein, Pat Holley and I.B. Daniels, and Louis Steven Santora (Creator of GUILIN).

Not many people know this, but I primarily identified myself as a singer and a writer before turning to dramaturgy. I spent twenty years as a singer on major stages in New York City, performing classical music, show tunes, and some opera.

For my MFA thesis at Columbia School of the Arts, I served as Production Dramaturg at Classic Stage Company under director Michael Mayer on Marivaux’s THE TRIUMPH OF LOVE. It was the New York City premiere of James Magruder’s adaptation of the comedy. Later, Michael and James adapted the play into a musical and took it to Broadway, starring Betty Buckley, F. Murray Abraham and Susan Egan.

This workshop is designed to familiarize the participants with the term “dramaturgy,” to enhance their understanding and appreciation of dramaturgy as a practice and a profession, and to provide them with the essential tools to practice dramaturgy.   We will examine dramaturgy in its various functions and explore the role of the dramaturg in relation to the play text, the playwright, the artistic team, the theatre, the audience, and the community as a whole, both professional and public.  Through extended discussions and practical exercises, this workshop will help develop an understanding of dramaturgy as a process integral to the creation, development, production, and reception of plays and theatrical performances.

Syllabus: Introduction to Dramaturgy; How to Read a Play: Reading with a Dramaturgical Sensibility; Dramaturgy Practicum and Case Studies – Overview; Case Study I and II; Dramaturgy Practicum III and IV; Daring Dramaturgies in Practice and New Voices in American Theatre; Resources for Dramaturgs and Playwrights.

Anne Hamilton is the Founder of Hamilton Dramaturgy, an international consultancy based in New York City’s professional scene. With 22 years of experience, her clients have gone on to win the Pulitzer Prize, the MacArthur “Genius” Award, the Tony  Award, and a Royal Court International Residency. STAGE DIRECTIONS magazine named her a “trailblazer” in American dramaturgy. She holds an MFA in theatre criticism and dramaturgy from Columbia University of the Arts, and was a Bogliasco Foundation Fellow. She hosts and produces TheatreNow!, an oral history podcast series on female theatre artists.

Walter Byongsok Chon is a doctor of fine arts candidate at the Yale School of Drama, where he has served as a Dramaturg and the Artistic Coordinator at the Yale Repertory Theatre as well as several YSD and Yale Cabaret productions. He has developed new plays at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center and The Great Plains Theater Conference. His other specialties include translation (Serpent At My Thigh, Inching Towards Yeolha, from Korean into English; Charles Mee’s True Love from English to Korean), conference presentations (ATHE, PTRS), and publications of his articles in Praxis, Theater, The Korean National Theatre Magazine, and The Korean Theatre Review. Walter holds a BA in English from Sungkyunkwan University, an MA in theatre studies from Washington University in St. Louis, and an MFA from the Yale School of Drama. He is an Associate Dramaturg at Hamilton Dramaturgy.

Dramaturgy Intensive in Omaha

On May 23rd and 24th I’ll be joining UNO Professor of Theatre Cindy Melby Phaneuf, Walter Byongsok Chon and Heather Helinksy in teaching a dramaturgy intensive at the University of Nebraska in Omaha. I met Cindy last May while I was serving as a dramaturg at the Great Plains Theatre Conference. She has put together a terrific intensive workshop, which will be led primarily by Walter. I will teach a section on dramaturging classics, using Carolyn Balducci’s adaptation of LYSISTRATA as a text.

This intensive is open to University of Nebraska – Omaha students only. If you are interested in the topic, please contact me at hamiltonlit@hotmail.com, and I will try to accommodate you in the future.

Attached is information on a 2 day intensive part of this summer’s offering for undergraduate and graduate students through the department of Theatre.  There will be 3 professional dramaturgs with MFAs from Yale, Columbia, and Harvard teaching this class with me.  We will meet for 2 intensive days on May 23 and 24—and then the students will participate in the Great Plains Theatre Conference for one day during the week following to see dramaturgs in action.  If a student can find 3 days in May—they can take advantage of this exciting learning opportunity.  The course is THEA 8000 for 3 credit hours—and beyond the days in May—the course will be completed as an independent project.
